A Emotional Moment as Liam Rosenior Breaks Barriers

"He is an excellent tactician that understands football intimately, and that's what matters most.

"But, as Chelsea's first African heritage player, I would be lying if I said this appointment does not affect me."

These were the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who made his historic first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, as their next head coach following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns Chelsea.

There have been only twelve black managers – not including those holding interim positions – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four in the past.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he grew up and played not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When children see someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that champions equality… that's profound and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, it is an enormous step for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Data Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach in 1996 and became the top flight's first black manager.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of ethnic minority managers across the English game corresponds with an absence of representation at executive level.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight players are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2% of executive and leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching positions, according to data from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – including senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as a Chelsea manager, and we want to witness more such appointments," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of ability present within ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show what they can do. It is imperative to continue to work hard to dismantle those barriers down."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time British managers presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which trails Europe's other major leagues in terms of homegrown managers.

Sixteen of the 20 first division coaches in Serie A are Italian, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 are German while Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure every aspiring British coaches with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It is really inspirational for young English coaches in the system to see an individual land that job with his background and we hope he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – he's there based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a brief stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered to tackling inequality within the sport and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not influence coaching skill arguing that opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He also made a point he has often stated: how vast under-representation results in a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, he explained the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "passionate", but said he understood the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "ashamed" upon hearing an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "blatant" racism.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

Rosenior said his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a long-term contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's pioneering African heritage manager with Gullit and the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
