The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in Maiden Address
During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.
An Unprecedented Leader
The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
