Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
